In November 2011 the Ramara Chamber of Commerce created a community group called Brechin and Beyond. The Brechin and Beyond committee is comprised of local volunteers, who have to date, worked countless hours on various projects.
The committee chair presented two requests to Council, the first one in March 2012 requesting funding for hanging flower baskets and flower barrels. The Council approved our request and our Gardening Chair, Shannon Moody along with volunteers, created the baskets and barrels seen on Hwy 12. Our second request to Council in April 2012, was for the donation of the existing sign on Hwy 12, with the heading Brechin Business Park. We received a grant from Our Ramara Endowment Fund towards the cost of updating the sign. Committee member, Suzan Bertrand created an artist’s drawing of the completed sign.
In April 2012, we hosted Earth Day at the Brechin Community Park. We invited the community to come out and help with the clean-up. A contest for local school children was held and the three winners were presented with plaques from the Township. We had over 150 volunteers and collected 33 bags of garbage. Watch for information about Earth Day 2013!
The Brechin and Beyond committee continue to fundraise for other projects. To date, we have had a vendor’s table at the Lumberjack event in June 2012, at the Chamber’s car show in July 2012 and at the Simcoe Organic Farmer’s Market held in Lagoon City, on numerous Saturday’s throughout the summer.
The Brechin and Beyond committee are grateful to the Township of Ramara, The Community Foundation of Orillia and Area, the Brechin Legion, Brechin and District Lions Club, the Brechin Community Centre Board, the Orillia Area Community Development Corporation and the Ramara Chamber of Commerce for their support of our endeavours. Brechin and Beyond continue to meet monthly and you are welcome to join us!
